The workshop was unique because it involved a hands-on puzzle activity. Dr. Korb and Jasmine gave us helpful tips about teaching students in science and in general. Dr. Korb was easy to talk to and gave us an interesting demonstration of the variety of toys in the HOST Lab box. -Cynia Sapp, Secretary, SAGES
I had a wonderful time discussing my teaching experiences with the group! This workshop discussed the importance of science education and pedagogy. It was wonderful to have such an interesting conversation about teaching STEM subjects with CSUEB College of Education professor Dr. Michele Korb! What a blast! - Jasmine Hain, Pre K-12 Area Leader, SAGES

I had a phenomenal time at my second STEM CAD event, the East Bay STEM Career Awareness Day! Designed to show high school students from throughout the Berkeley/Oakland region the wealth of opportunity in STEM career fields, this event was a real inspiration! I chaperoned a group of students on a tour of the Siemens Berkley facility, getting a VIP tour of their recent developments in cancer treatment. We also visited an exciting company, All Power Labs, which is currently developing sustainable energy systems which utilize plant matter to generate electricity (Oh, and did I mention that we were featured in the Mercury News?!). This event, much like the Hayward STEM Career Awareness Day, was a real eye-opener for me. I met so many enthusiastic and inquisitive students! What a treat! - Jasmine Hain, Pre K-12 Area Leader
I had an amazing time at the Hayward STEM Career Awareness Day 2016! I had the opportunity to meet some really inspiring local high school students, and engaged them in conversations about college and career-planning. I also had the privilege of accompanying them on a tour of Motiv Power Systems, an exciting new company located in Hayward which converts large diesel trucks and automobiles to use electrical power! What an amazing day! - Jasmine Hain, Pre K-12 Area Leader
I had a great time with Jasmine, our K-12 Area Leader, at the Business and Education Mixer held at the Hayward City Hall! We were able to meet with both Hayward STEM related businesses, local government, and educators from the Hayward Unified School District. There is nothing more inspiring than a space where so many segments of our community gather based on the shared belief in the potential of Hayward youth, leading to tangible ways to build bridges despite the existing disparities. On a side note, the food provided by Eko Coffee and Tea House was DELICIOUS!!
- Hadia Amani, SAGES Professional Development Officer The Business & Education mixer for the STEM Career Impact program was a blast! This event is the first of four events in the STEM Career Impact Program which aims to give over 500 local high school students a VIP tour of local STEM industries and education programs as well as professional skills. The food was amazing, provided by Eko Coffee Bar and Tea House, the best spot for good coffee and delicious crêpes. Eko Coffee supports SAGES in fundraising events and donations, so be sure to stop by!Professional Development Leader Hadia Amani and I had a great time networking with teachers, learning about high school STEM clubs who may be interested in visiting Cal State East Bay! Overall, this event was a blast! - Jasmine Hain, Pre K-12 Area Leader Math anxiety is something all too real in our society, but after attending the SAGES Math Workshop led by math professors in the Department of Teacher Education Dr. McNamara and Dr. Olkin and active participation from physics professor Dr. Guzman, I learned a hands on a lesson where one can slowly unfold what pi is and represents to move kids away from common knee jerk responses, such as "3.14" or "dessert" . Learn I did! I led the activity at the SEM Link STEM Career Fair at Laney College for the kids and parents approaching the SAGES table I was representing.
For me, science drew me in because it was always about exploring the world around you; understanding how things work while having room to delve into the unknown. The math workshop taught me how I could do the same with teaching math, and it definitely engaged the parents and kids and left them in awe!! I had them measure objects from Pringles caps to dinner plates, adding their calculations to large chart, doing some crafts to make visual diagrams, and bringing everyone together to analyze all the data collected on the chart before wrapping with the answer to our initial questioned posed: "What is longer, the distance across the soda can or around it?" Many of these were younger kids in the middle school and elementary level, so it felt great to open up positive, accessible real world applications outside of a school setting to both "math lovers" and the "math-fearing" alike. I think it's safe to say we all left the event with a new outlook, and at the end of the day, they might never forget that the distance around any circular shape you find will always be about 3.14 longer than the distance across it! Hadia Amani SAGES Area Leader I had a great time touring the students from John Muir Middle School's AVID program through CSUEB! These young students asked insightful questions, and I really enjoyed their interest in our science and arts programs. Fellow SAGES officer Tyeshia Sapp and I took the students to most buildings on campus, viewed the CSUEB soccer field and walked through the The Annual Bachelor of Fine Art Student ExhibitionShow in the Arts and Education building. What a great way to spend a Tuesday afternoon! - Jasmine Hain, Pre K-12 Area Leader
About 33 AVID students from John Muir middle school arrived on our campus early afternoon, excited to explore the campus and learn as much as possible about college and the world of STEM. Before embarking on the campus tour hosted by Jasmine and myself, they attended a host lab focusing on Density. These young ladies and gentlemen were some of the brightest and focused students I have met so far. Curious to know everything they could think to ask concerning their future regarding college and the transition from grade school to higher learning. We ventured around campus to see the dorms, some of the most frequented buildings on campus, and allowing them to witness all the student life activities that occur here on campus. - Tyeshia Sapp, SAGES Treasurer Today I had the opportunity to take a group of students from the 6th grade class at Edendale Middle School around campus as part of their HOST Labs field trip! The students had some amazing and insightful questions about college life which were really impressive. It was a wonderful experience to see the kids up at campus, looking at student work and learning about college life!
- Jasmine Hain, Pre K-12 Area Leader The State of SMASH event celebrated the efforts of 70 local high school students who will be entering college as first-generation students in the coming years. These wonderfully inspiring students spent two months on the campus of either UC Berkeley or Stanford, taking classes and learning about college life. It was really wonderful to get to meet them, and I can only hope our paths will cross again in the future! - Jasmine, Pre K-12 Area Leader
As the teens and families from The State of SMASH began to eagerly fill into the Valley Business and Technology lobby for delicious treats, a few asked about our experience as college students; I couldn't help but feel a wave of nostalgia come over me. I still have the faint memory as a high school student lost in the sea information regarding college. For me It was the college outreach programs, similar to SMASH, that I still feel indebted to. It reminded me of the importance of collaborating with organizations supporting the underrepresented to pursue higher education is key to bridging gaps, improving lives, and fueling our community's future, As I drifted back into the present, I let the visitors know that as college students, the most important thing is to take initiative and seek out opportunities! -Hadia Amani. Professional Development Area Leader On Tuesday, November 3rd, I had to opportunity to meet briefly with students from Patterson Elementary visiting CSUEB for a HOST Labs field trip. We had an informal Q&A session, where students asked me questions about college life and studying at CSUEB. It was remarkable how many questions these students had, and their level of interest and enthusiasm for pursuing a degree in science! These young students were very inspiring, and I am so glad that SAGES will have the opportunity to have these lunchtime Q&A sessions with other schools throughout the year! - Jasmine Hain, SAGES Pre K-12 Area Leader
The Chemistry Magic Show hosted by Danika LaDuc, her son Sean, and myself, was tons of fun and had an amazing turn out. It was a full house full of children and their families. They were entertained by all the cool experiments and it was great allowing all the kids to spin the color wheel in order to win a prize. - Cynia Sapp, SAGES Secretary
The Bay Area Science Festival was a phenomenal success! We estimate that nearly 400 people visited the SAGES table, and we all had a wonderful opportunity to interact with inspiring young students from around the Bay Area. There were over 50 workshops occurring throughout the day, ranging across all STEM disciplines with inspiring STEM professionals and educators. I can't wait for the next Science Fest at the Bay! - Jasmine Hain, K-12 Outreach Area Leader It was wonderful to connect with the wider community this weekend at the Bay Area Science Festival hosted on campus. Our SAGES table was flooded with visitors, young and old, excited to learn and have fun at our science trivia game. I loved seeing the kids eagerly get back in line multiple time, hoping for another shot at our prizes. - Hadia Amani, SAGES Professional Development Area Leader |
